The Here and Now & Interaction Futures

Surveying the Landscape

Proliferating devices

First of all, what is proliferating devices? Proliferating devices seems like a complex term, but really it just means that devices are rapidly changing and increasing in number.

In the past, going back 30 years, devices were really just TVs, telephones and maybe a computer if you were wealthy enough. Nowadays, there are so many different types of devices of varying sized, functions and interfaces. There is a device or function within a device for almost everything. Even prelisting things are being replaced with devices, such as Kindles and audiobooks replacing paperback books. These differences reflects the proliferating of devices over the past new decades.

This has led to some key changes for designers. Changing contexts and content shifting have changed the type of context that the average user consumes on a device. Content needs to be available on numerous different devices of different screen sized, interfaces and compatibilities.

The web was always fluid

Tim Berners-Lee is seen as responsible for creating the first web page. Many, including myself, would have thought that it would be unlikely that this website would have been accessible different screen sizes. However, it wasn't tied to a certain device interface like many early sites, and was actually responsive on different screen sizes too!

The Web is Content

Today, there are so many different types of devices and content that users interact with in numerous different ways. Devices are no longer just something that you look at on a screen, some are small, wireless and may even go unnoticed to many people. As a fesult, different interfaces are needed to allow users to navigate these as simply as possible, leading to things such as voice recognition and touchscreen.

Wearable Technology

Wearable technology is increasingly popular, such as vests and smartwatches, often used to measure health.

For example, Heart Rate Vests are still quite new in the world of technology, only really emerging in the past decade or so. As they increased, so has ther popularity, as they are much more recognised and used than before.. These are beneficial for users as they measure their health. They don’t have a touchscreen interface, yet still need a good UI so that they can be used with ease.
