For our first project, we have been tasked with employing our knowledge on the key blocks of design; Point, Line and Plane, which were the focus of our first lesson of the semester. Showing a key understanding of each of these is vital for being able to create visually striking and intriguing designs. We were asked to create a series of Instagram-style (1080 x 1080) frames following a simple brief for point, line and plane.
This task involves using a series of squares involving points, lines and planes to communicate something. For both point an line, we were tasked with creating two series of five frames to communicate a word. For example, for point I could choose to portray dominance, which would involve expressively and carefully designing a series of frames with points that successfully communicate this to an audience. Our task for plane was slightly different, as we were only asked to produce one set of frames and portray something that we choose. However, of course this did not mean placing these randomly, as there must be a clear mathematical structure, pattern or strategy.
Before beginning this project, I spent some time researching point, line and plane to ensure that I had the right knowledge and skills to begin working on my project. I also wanted to look at how both I perceive point, line, plane and the terms I wish to convey, as having a good understanding of this will be key. To help be gain a deeper understanding of the significance of these, I decided to look out for them in everyday life. By doing this, I aimed to understand how ‘naturally’ point, line and plane and implemented into the things we see everyday.
As I had learned in week 1 ‘Point, Line, Plane’, a point is a fundamental aspect of design. It can be large and noticeable or small and seemingly insignificant, yet either way it is a vital aspect of design. Point can be large or small, bold or barely visible, either way it is a fundamental aspect of design. I actually noticed point in everyday a number of times, such as on a mug, in public transport and more. I found it beneficial to take a step back and observe how it occurs so often in our everyday lives, objects and more.
Similarly to point, taking time to observe line in everyday life made me realise how much it is implemented into designs.
I plane more sparsely scattered throughout ordinary life. To my surprise, plane was the easiest to come across despite me anticipating struggling with it the most.
Before beginning to sketch out my initial ideas, I had to choose the word brief that I wish to follow to create my point line planes. After careful consideration, I decided:
