Over the summer, we were encouraged to look into portfolios so that we would have a better sense of what we’d like to create upon coming back to second year. I decided that my best approach for preparing myself for creating my portfolio was to gain a sense of what I like in a portfolio by looking at existing ones. By establishing whist I see as strengths in other portfolios, I will have a much clearer idea of what I’d like my outcome to be like.

I browsed some websites and blog posts about some of the strongest examples of UX design portfolios. I really enjoyed looking through these and found it a great point of idea generation:

Matt Fredette

I found Fredette’s portfolio when browsing a publishing about strong examples of design portfolios. This one stood out to me for to its clarity and simplicity. I found that some portfolios focused too heavily on being unique and striking so that it actually takes away from the work being showcased. Furthermore, it is evident that Fredette has followed a clear grid structure in his work, particularly in the showcase section as it is organised and easy to navigate, making it user friendly and extremely visually strong.

Buzz Usborne

Buzz Usborne is a designer located in Australia. His portfolio really stood out in my memory as we briefly looked at it during our induction lecture, so I decided to take a deeper look to understand why it had such an impact on me. Upon opening the site, I was immediately greeted with warmth and playfulness, with features like changing, bouncing emojis to interactive buttons, and even an animated logo standing out even at first glance. Exploring this example showed me the importance of a successful portfolio, as I found myself becoming interested in his work and exploring the site and his work, simply because I found it visually appealing and intriguing!
